What’s the highest point in Crystal River? It’s a temple mound overlooking Crystal River that was built by Native Americans a thousand years ago, before Europeans ever arrived in the Americas. Crystal River Archaeological State Park is one of the many treasures marking the rich cultural tapestry of this region of Florida and the United States.

Other important historical sites include Fort Cooper State Park in Inverness—marking an important battle in the Second Seminole War–and the Yulee Sugar Mill Ruins in Homosassa, center of a once vast sugar plantation in the era before and during the American Civil War.
