Withlacoochee State Forest: 3-Day Backpacking Adventure
The Withlacoochee State Forest offers some of the most beautiful scenery Florida has to offer. The Citrus Tract of the State Forest covers over 43 miles of connected loops, of which we will hike 29 of those miles over the span of 3 days. This hike is moderately paced and rated as "easy". It's perfect for a beginner backpacker who wants the scenery but not the difficulty! We'll wind through pristine pine flatwoods, beautiful hammocks (or fairy gardens, as I call them) filled with the sweet scent of cedar trees and succulent moss, and 2 of Florida's famous cave systems that we will be able to also explore. If we're lucky, there may be have been a prescribed burn recently and we'll get to traverse the burnt "graveyard" that will one day bring new, healthy forest life! At night we'll camp at one of the primitive campsites nestled on a rolling hill, next to a fire with long, well maintained, wooden benches. This will be a trip to remember!
The $45 fee for this trip will include:* The campsite that will be available for us to use the night before our departure as this may be a long drive for some.* 1st nights meal* Water/Food drops along the trail for easy access and lighter loads.* All planning and itinerary* Hike guided by a Florida Master Naturalist* GPS navigation* First aid
