5 Outdoor Experiences in Citrus County

Clear water, tranquil nature trails and adorable wildlife — that’s what awaits you when you visit Citrus County, Florida. I recently made the drive up to Florida’s Nature Coast from Miami, and the trip was nothing short of incredible. If you love exploring the outdoors and want to experience one of the most peaceful counties of Florida, taking a trip to this part of the state is absolutely worth it. Here are five of the best outdoor experiences you can have in Citrus County.

Manatees in the springs at Crystal River

1. Swim with Manatees

Swimming with manatees is one of the most popular things you can do during manatee season, which hits its peak from November through March. If you’re fortunate enough to visit during that time, you can book a tour with companies like Paddletail Waterfront Adventures or Crystal River Watersports for a fun, simple way to swim with these adorable creatures.

When I visited, it wasn’t manatee season, so I definitely plan on scheduling a return trip to Crystal River to experience this.

2. Dive for Scallops

When I visited Citrus County, it was the middle of scallop season (July-Sept.), so we spent the morning diving through the grassy waters of the Gulf searching for these elusive, blue-eyed mollusks. Just like with swimming with the manatees, you can book a tour with a variety of knowledgeable guides and spend a refreshing few hours out on the water.

I’m usually timid in open waters, but diving in the Gulf was simple and stress-free. The water is way shallower than I expected, and if you have any concerns like I did, the guides are there the whole time to ensure an excellent experience.

3. Bike the Withlacoochee State Trail

The Withlacoochee State Trail in Inverness is one of the longest in Florida, and it’s a beautiful place for scenic walks and easy bike rides. Even though we were visiting on a summer day, the shaded walkway and gentle breeze made our ride very enjoyable and not too hot.

We hopped on this gorgeous trail and explored several miles in the morning by e-bike, but you could just as easily set out on foot or on a traditional bicycle. All of these options are welcome on the paved trail.

4. Swim at Hunter Springs Park

Hunter Springs Park is home to a small sandy shore area and a designated swimming place for visitors who want to take a dip in the cool water. You can swim here year-round, and when we were here, we saw a mother and her calf swimming in nearby King’s Bay — even though it wasn’t peak manatee season. The water was crisp and a welcome way to cool off after spending the morning diving for scallops in the Gulf.

On shore, there are also plenty of picnic tables, a playground, grills and spaces to lay out and relax with the whole family.

5. Visit the Crystal River Archaeological State Park

Early mornings in Citrus County are best spent at Crystal River Archaeological State Park. As a history fan, this well-kept state park was one of my favorite things to see in the area. It’s easy to wander among the six ancient mounds or climb to the top of one for unbeatable views of the area.

And when you’re ready for some cool air, step inside to the onsite museum for even more information about the area and the indigenous communities who once lived on the grounds you just explored.
