Where to Ride Near Crystal River, FL

Shorter 60-mile Loop: from Crystal River to Ozello Trail and Homosassa Springs

Starting in Crystal River, head toward Homosassa Springs on US Route 98 South. About four miles south of Crystal River, look for The Ozello Trail, which offers a scenic 20-mile out-and-back ride with many turns.

One of the most popular roads for motorcyclists, The Ozello Trail is also listed on maps as Route 494. The Ozello Trail winds through Crystal River Preserve State Park and ends at Ozello Community Park, right on the Gulf Coast. If you’re headed out on the trail, stop for a bite to eat at Peck’s Old Port Cove, which is known for fresh seafood and 360-degree views of the beautiful marshes. Backwater Fins is also conveniently located right on the trail and offers waterfront outdoor seating and Cajun-style cooking and fresh seafood.

After hitting the trail, continue south US Route 98 toward Homosassa Springs. When you reach Homosassa Springs, hop off and enjoy the Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park.

Wildlife Watching at Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park

In the winter months, this natural spring is a hotspot for manatee watching. The park’s Underwater Observatory will take you beneath the spring’s surface to observe wildlife and fish up close. If you’re feeling hungry, there is a casual cafe in the park, or you can pack a picnic lunch to enjoy in one of the pavilions.

Head Back to Crystal River

When you exit the park, head south on 98 until you hit W Oak Park Boulevard also known as County Road 480. Turn left to head east on 480, then in about 7 miles, turn left to head north on County Road 491 back toward Lecanto. Continue on Florida 44 to end in Crystal River.

Longer 80-mile Loop: from Crystal River Through Floral City and Inverness

For a longer ride, try extending your loop by continuing to Floral City and Inverness. Start with the shorter loop directions above, then when you exit Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park, you can take Oak Park Boulevard, aka, County Road 480 east until it turns into the Stage Coach Trail. This route circles around 50,000 untouched acres, known as the Citrus Wildlife Management Area and part of the larger Withlacoochee State Forest. Stop off in the park for some hiking, fishing, and wildlife viewing, then continue on County Road 480 until it hits US-41 just south of Floral City.

Floral City’s “Avenue of The Oaks”

While in Floral City, take a detour to ride under the city’s famous canopy of centuries-old oak trees known as the “Avenue of The Oaks.” Head down Orange Avenue, to witness the stunning beauty of these ancient trees. During the winter holiday season, Orange Avenue is decked out in sparkling lights and may be closed to vehicular traffic and limited to pedestrians only.

Stop in Inverness for Dining & Nightlife

Leaving Floral City, continue on US-41 north toward Inverness. If you’re looking for a place to stop and explore, Inverness’s walkable downtown offers shopping, dining, and nightlife options. It’s a great place to stop for fresh seafood or pub fare. To head back toward Crystal River, catch Florida 44 going west, which will take you right back into town.
